Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl's journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.

How can I not read a Beauty and the Beast retelling? This was/is so beautiful. The story was amazing. The characters where awesome. Just in general, the book just perfect.

If Rosamund Hodge can write up another retelling + action scenes… you will forever be my favorite author! Greek mythology with a classic tale = BRILLIANT! Her writing style is flowy and it’s not like regular retellings, which I really like since retellings are retellings but this had a twist.

People who have seen Beauty and the Beast or knows the tale of it, it’s so far from it. Sure it’s based on it but Hodge took a big turn with this. So the main character’s name is Nyx and since she was born, she was destined to marry this “demon” named Ignifex. Ignifex isn’t really his name but it’s just what he goes by. This all happened when Nyx’s father made a stupid deal with Ignifex. Now not only married to him, she’s trained to kill him. But during the times she spent with Ignifex, she starts to fall for him.

Talk about a rough relationship. I thought I would hate Ignifex but for some reason, I can’t. He is evil and cruel at times yet again I can’t hate him. Then there’s Shade. I don’t even know what to feel about him. The relationship between Nyx and Ignifex is rocky but you can see the tension between them and it’s so frustrating but it plays out really well. It’s official… I ship them.

Now the ending was not what I expected. The direction was the same as mine but the way it happened was so unexpected for me. I just didn’t know what or how it would end. But Hodge came through and crafted a beautiful work of literature.

Rosamund Hodge’s debut novel will sweep the nation.
